The line of treatment for the breast lump would depend upon the nature of the lump which could be ascertained through investigations like, MR Mammography, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) or a Trucut Biopsy. In case the breast lump is benign or non cancerous then the breast specialist in India would advise you to get the lump removed by the surgery called lumpectomy. If the tests confirm cancer in the breast then mastectomy (breast removal) is advised. After the removal of the breast, it is sent for biopsy and IHC markers. The report of the IHC markers determines whether chemotherapy or hormonal therapy or radiation is required after the surgery. Once the treatment is completed then regular followup with the treating doctor is required. Follow up tests should be done as per the advice of the doctor to check for any kind of recurrence of the disease.
The cost of breast surgery depends upon the nature of the lump. The surgery may be a simple lumpectomy in case of a benign lump or a mastectomy in case of a cancerous lesion. In case it is a lumpectomy that is to be done then the cost of the surgery would be Rs. 70-80 thousand with 1-2 days stay in the hospital and post discharge stay in India would be for about 7 days. In case of mastectomy the cost would be Rs. 1-1.5 Lacs with about 3 days stay in hospital and post discharge stay in India for about 2 weeks. In cases of breast cancer, the surgery might be followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy and that could cost in the range of Rs. 1 - 2.5 Lacs.
