Vasectomy is a method of birth control for males. Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. During the procedure, the male vas deferens are severed and then tied or sealed in a manner so as to prevent sperm from entering into the seminal stream (ejaculate) and thereby prevent fertilization. An egg cannot be fertilized when there are no sperm in the semen. The testicles continue to produce sperm, but the sperms are reabsorbed by the body. The surgery is also known as family planning surgery.
The Surgery is done as a short stay procedure. The patient comes to the hospital and is straightaway ushered into the operating room where the doctors perform the surgery under local anaesthesia and the patient goes home in less than 2 hours. The patient can perform all the normal activities immediately after the surgery and can have sex also that very day. Vasectomy surgery does not affect the sexual power of the male as is the misconception in some people.
Vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) reconnects the tubes (vas deferens) that were cut during a vasectomy. Vasectomy reversal is usually a daycare procedure (without an overnight stay in the hospital). Spinal or general anesthesia is commonly used to ensure that you stay still during the surgery. A Unique Technique for Vasectomy reversal was introduced by Dr Suresh Vatsyayann. The technique known as the `Vatsyayann Technique for Vasectomy Reversal' is a Single Suture Dual Purpose Technique in which a Single Suture is given which acts as a stent in the Vas and helps in healing. The Suture dissolves within the vas in the next few days. The advantages of this technique is that a Single Suture is used as compared to 8 or 16 Sutures in the Microscopic Technique. The more sutures you use, more are the chances of adhesions forming in the vas and increasing the chances of failure of the surgery. The success rate of the Vatsyayann Technique is close to 90% as compared to 40% in the microscopic surgery using 8 / 16 sutures.
Vasectomy is a very simple surgery and can be done successfully by any qualified doctor. The cost of this surgery is USD 500 at our hospital. The Vasectomy reversal is a tricky surgery and the results are less than 50% in the hands of most of the surgeons. Dr. Suresh's technique of Single Suture Surgery has a very high success rate. The cost of this surgery at our hospital is USD 1000 by any of our Urologists or General Surgeons. However if you wish to get this surgery done by Dr. Suresh himself then the cost would be USD 1500 and the waiting time would be almost 3 weeks before you can get the date for the surgery. Patients from all over the world come to India to get this surgery done by Dr. Suresh using his special technique.
The hospital stay for vasectomy reversal surgery is just few hours and the patient can fly back home in a couple of days once the surgeon examines the stitches given post surgery. We use dissovable sutures and therefore there is no need to wait for the sutures to be removed.
